What looks interesting in the FTSE 100? Chris Bailey reviews...

Winnileaks: Breaking - Frontera Resources under FCA investigation for misleading investors. Read HERE

Back in the day, I used to be an institutional fund manager and did go on a number of brokerage lunches at around this time of year. The essential underlying aim of these lunches did not change for years: a thank you for business given during the year...and a pitch or ten about stocks that could be bought (or sold) early the next year in order to keep that commission flow going (and from the broker's perspective hopefully building). It seemed to me that the ideas took a very simple form: buy the underperformers and sell the outperformers. Well who does not like a bargain or - indeed - to take profits? So from an akin premise - but with an added slice of cynicism (and no need to elicit your brokerage commission flows!) - what does a 'brokerage lunch list' throw up as interesting in December 2018 looking ahead into 2019?

HaloSource – shares suspended, a Woodford dog at last looks set to be put down. Read HERE

There are some FTSE 100 winners, including a double digit gain from all of the top ten. Goodness that is an idiosyncratic list and includes dividend muncher favourites GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) (which I wrote on this week) and AstraZeneca (AZN). I am almost bored even just writing their names. They are not going to end up like one of the other top 10 names, the soon-to-be-departing Shire (SHP) - which the Japanese have bought for a pretty penny. Enjoy the good dividend and dollar denominated revenue share boost and exit into the night.

I'm sure the FCA now in daily contact with Neil Woodford - how close are we to end game? Tom Winnifrith Bonus Bearcast HERE

By contrast, two other names on the list are far more interesting. Whitbread (WTB) was a good winner for me during 2018 and as I noted a couple of months ago HERE, the game is far from over given the attractions of the Premier Inn franchise. Similarly Smith & Nephew (SN.) has been a net winner in 2018 but has recently come back to the interesting near 14 quid support levels. I see new management, an activist investor on the books and a good-looking thematic product range in artificial hips and related. I loved the shares almost a year ago HERE - and would suggest sub 1400p the stock is worth a look.

Interserve – don’t panic, keep calm and carry on (to disaster?). Read Nigel Somerville HERE

As for 2018 losers, I am not sure if I will be allowed to give much more love to Kingfisher (KGF) which I last wrote up HERE. I even had somebody phone me up and ask if it was the Kingfisher PR department! I own the stock only suffice to say... Options to split it up and a geared play on France among other aspects including a strong dividend and a good balance sheet. I also wrote up DS Smith (SMDS) recently HERE - and would really highlight this name as offering an interesting fusion of growth, cash flow and a thematic thumbs up wrapped up in a lowish valuation and good income angle.

Plant Health Care – sales warning, but still argues “very encouraged” & “confidence”. Really? Steve Moore reviews HERE

Finally, the biggest FTSE 100 loser is (perhaps surprisingly) British American Tobacco (BATS) thanks to big deals and big exposure to menthol cigarettes. It is probably past its worst...but I am more of an Imperial Tobacco (IMB) share picker myself. Not that I use any of the products though...filthy habit!

Risk Warning & Disclaimer

The hot share tips given here are of necessity, general. They cannot relate to the individual circumstances of investors. Anyone considering following the share tips contained here should seek independent advice from a Financial Conduct Authority authorised Stockbroker or Financial Adviser. We cannot be held liable if individuals suffer losses through following share tips contained on this site or emailed out as free share tips. The value of investments can go down as well as up. The past is not necessarily a guide to future performance. Investing in shares can lose you part or all of your capital although the potential returns are theoretically unlimited. The difference between the buy share price and the sell share price for smaller company shares (penny shares) can be significant. Profits from dealing in shares may be liable to tax - the level of tax and bases of relief from tax are subject to change. Changes in the rates of exchange may have an adverse effect on the value or price of an investment in sterling terms if it is denominated in a foreign currency. Some of the shares recommended on this site will be smaller company shares. By their nature such investments can be relatively illiquid and thus hard to trade. And that makes such investments more of a high risk than larger company shares (or 'small caps'/'penny shares'). FiveFreeShareTips.com & its sister site ShareProphets.com defines a smaller company share as any stock traded on AIM or NEX or which has a market capitalisation of less than £300 million.
